Event Description: Feather River Weekday Steelhead Hunt

This is a one day up and back trip to the Feather River at the town of Oroville to fish for steelhead with up to 6 TVFF members. However, if you prefer to come up the day before and/or stay an extra day feel free to make your own arrangements at a local hotel.
Please bring your own water and favorite lunch items with you as we will meet on the river @ noon to eat, compare notes and swap stories. After lunch we'll head back for additional fishing until about 3:30-4:00. That should give us enough time to walk back to the vehicles, pack up our gear and meet for an optional happy hour at The Union 2053 Montgomery St, Oroville, CA 95965 to hopefully celebrate our fishing successes.
If you want to move around and be able to access more of the river you will need to be comfortable with medium or above level of wading skills in 2-4 feet of water. I can set you up in spots that have easier wading but they may offer more limited back casting and/or fishing options. Generally we shouldn't need to go more than 50-200 yards up or down the river from the spot where we started.
This will be the 4th year for this Club trip. The Feather can be a productive and exciting water that offers a nice day trip being only 2:45 hours away from Pleasanton/Livermore. Our day will encompass a full day of fishing with a streamside break for lunch, you will need to bring your own food and beverages. Please note you will also need a Steelhead Report Card in addition to your 2023 license.
Typical setups include 5-8 weight rods along with a reel that holds plenty of backing. Although a 5 weight can work, you’ll be happier you had something more stout when you are lucky enough to set the hook on one of the bigger fish. Flies will vary but can include salmon egg patterns, your favorite trout nymphs and alevins.

Additional note: Please be aware that the following day (Wednesday, January 6, 2021) has been scheduled as a backup in the event of inclement weather.

Cost:

Cash price: The cost is $25 for TVFF members. Non-member and Guest cost is $70 (includes an annual membership to TVFF).

You may pay by check or cash directly to the Club Treasurer within two weeks of registration. If you do pay cash you will be put into "Pending Registration" until your payment is received within the two weeks. Late payments will require you to register once again if there is space still available.

Credit Card price: The cost is $25.75 for TVFF members (includes 3% credit card surcharge.) Non-member and Guest cost is $72.10 (includes an annual membership to TVFF plus the 3% credit card surcharge).

Fishmeister: Alan Wyosnick

Accommodations and Food:

Each angler should bring their own lunch and drinks to normally be had in the group on one of the river gravel bars. Drinks and dinner are available for additional cost at the Oroville Brewing Company at the conclusion of the day.  Members and guests are responsible for their own transportation costs as well.

Gear and Tackle Recommendations:

Rod & line weights/types: 6-8 wt traditional fly rods & reels (or spey). Floating or intermediate/sinking lines.

Leaders and tippet: Usually short tippets no 1-3X of 4-6' are used. The fish are not leader shy this early in the run so it is more about your ability to hold a fish in a quick downstream run.

Other gear: Standard waders, usually with spikes to navigate the gravel bars, and normal fishing wear including warm clothes (layers). Hat. Waterproof jackets.  Dress for wet and/or dry weather, air temps. 25-55 degrees. You know, typical Steelhead weather.

Flies: Flies will vary but can include eggs, mayfly nymphs, alevins, leeches, and various other streamers. Last year there we noticed that there was a bit of surface activity and fish feeding and jumping and it is known that they can also be caught on early season dry flies if you are so inclined (which must be quite a hoot).

Tri Valley Fly Fishers

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Protocol

TVFF Outings Policy as of September 20, 2020

As a club, the Tri-Valley Fly Fishers have developed and agreed to a set of required guidelines, protocols and rules in order to help direct our members on ways to stay safe on one-day outings, multi-day outings, or individual “Tag-Alongs”.

These protocols were developed by the TVFF Board of Directors as well as input from other local clubs which included a member virologist, various safety committees, and member experts. We feel that these protocols and guidelines are consistent with public health information and experts. These protocols are assured, observed, and enforced by outing leaders as well as members themselves.

Please note that the Tri-Valley Fly Fishers accepts no liability for inadequate protection or the transmission of Covid-19 among members or guests. Therefore, each member should review the following protocols that the Club subscribes to and make an individual decision of whether to participate in an activity or not, based upon their individual circumstances and personal safety.

TVFF Outings protocols are as follows:

  • If you are sick with cold/flu symptoms then we ask you to please stay home
  • We believe in social distancing and request that all members keep a full fly rod distance of at least 6’ distance between parties.
  • We ask that you respect individual members decisions if they choose to adhere to more strict guidelines including wearing masks if within 6’ on outings.
  • All attendees should wash and sanitize their hands frequently.

TVFF Cancellation Policy:

To sign-up for a TVFF Event  that is currently open for registration and chargeable (as set by the Fishmeister), you must both register and pay online, or via check or cash, within two weeks of registering (sent to the TVFF Treasurer) whatever fee is described for that particular Event (trip) at the time of registration. There may be multiple payments required before the trip is actually taken (usually in the case of expensive trips), but it is necessary that you do make payment in the above timely fashion for the initial amount to secure your position on the trip.  However, please note that you are still responsible for the entire amount of the trip if you should need to cancel.

Once you are registered, there are no refunds for chargeable Events and trips.  In the situation that a member is, for any reason unable to attend, they may resell their registration slot to another TVFF member (by first pulling from the waitlist if one exists).  New participants must come first from the waitlist in the order they signed up.  The member cancelling is fully and solely responsible for contacting potential members to replace them and notifying the appropriate Fishmeister.

If an event/trip is fully registered and closed to registration, you may still sign up on the Wait List to be notified if there are any cancellations.  In such a case of registering provisionally on the Wait List, you do not have to pay until such time that you clear the Wait List and are confirmed for participation.
