January Fly Tying Get Together

  • January 06, 2020
  • 7:00 PM
  • Livermore Rod & Gun Club

Our Get Together this month will meet on Monday, Jan. 6 at 7pm in the fly tying room at the Rod and Gun Club. In these meetings we discuss anything related to fly fishing. Just drop in and bring up a subject or question.

Soft hackle flies are on the docket this month. This fly pattern has been mentioned in writings as early as the mid 1400s. It's a great fly and should be in everyone's fly box. We'll go over different materials and several ways to apply the hackle collar. Big feather, small hook, no problem.

Material:

  • Hook - Nymph or dry hooks 1x-2x long, 12 to 18. Mustad 3906B, TMC 3761, Daiichi 1560 1xl
  • Abdomen - Tying thread, floss, dubbing. Colors can be almost anything - orange, yellow, black, green, etc.
  • Thorax - Dubbing to complement the abdomen
  • Hackle - Soft webby feathers such as partridge, grouse, hen cape, starling, quail, coot and more.
  • Weight - lead or non lead wire, brass or tungsten beads optional
