Event Description
This event has been converted to a non club sanctioned "Tag-Along" trip due to Coronavirus concerns and guidelines.
Individuals participating in this trip should consider whether they wish to attend due to Coronavirus concerns. They should also review how comfortable they feel regarding employing strict CoronaVirus guidelines while on this trip, as will all attendees who will be social distancing, not sharing any meals, wearing masks when appropriate per the guidelines, and traveling in individual cars to the sites.
This is a three night, four day camping trip to Baum and Manzanita Lakes in the Shasta and Lassen National Park watersheds. You can fish from shore at both lakes but a watercraft is recommended. See the location notes below for more information.
The fishmeister will be present all four days, but participants can attend whichever days work for their schedules.
Cost
Cash price: You may pay by check or cash directly to the Club Treasurer within two weeks of registration and not pay the credit card surcharge of 3%. If you do pay by cash or check, you will be put into "Pending Registration" until your payment is received within the two weeks. Late payments will require you to register once again if there is space still available. For TVFF members, the cost for this trip is $25. For non-members and guests, the cost is $70 and includes a 12-month TVFF membership.

Accommodations and Food
Camping will be at Manzanita Lake campground. The fishmeister will reserve enough sites for tent campers. If you are planning to bring an RV or trailer, you should reserve your own site as soon as possible. The campground also offers some cabins that can be reserved.
Each individual is responsible for their own food, although we may decide later to do some group meals at an additional cost based upon number and food costs.
Location Notes
Baum Lake
Fed by both Hat Creek and Crystal Lake, Baum Lake has a current and therefore an anchor is strongly recommended. There are some areas near the ramp where the current is light and you can live without an anchor, but that also puts you in casting range of folks on shore. You should bring an anchor; this one works well for me with my pontoon. If your boat has oars, you should definitely bring those too.
Baum is shallow with lots of weed beds and some deeper channels (3-8'). The rainbows and browns in this lake have plenty of food, so they grow quickly and fight well. The abundance of bugs means regular hatches and good opportunities to fish dries. Fishing nymphs under an indicator is very common, and stripping streamers can also work well.
It's about a 45 minute drive from Manzanita Lake campground to Baum.
Restrictions: No gas motors; electric motors are allowed
Cell service: You can get a Verizon signal only in a couple of spots on the water; AT&T supposedly works in the parking lot
Manzanita Lake
Located just inside the gate of Lassen Volcanic National Park, Manzanita Lake's wild trout make it popular with fly fishermen. It's considered a good lake for fishing dries, and there are plenty of shallow areas (2-8') where you can use nymphs to target fish holding in the weed beds. There's also a large central area with deeper water up to 30' where stripping streamers with an intermediate or sink-tip line can be very effective.
Given its location inside a national park, there is a $30 park entrance fee per vehicle unless you have a lifetime or annual pass.
Restrictions: No motors; barbless hooks; catch & release
Cell service: Basic calling/texting on Verizon works in some areas of the lake; other carriers unknown. No Verizon service in campground, although there is a pay phone near the camp store. Decent Verizon service can be found inside the park about a mile from the campground.
Gear and Tackle Recommendations
Rod & line weights/types: 4, 5 or 6 weight rods, reels and floating and sinking lines
Leaders and tippet: For streamers I build my own leaders with 2-3' of 20# mono, 3-4' of 15# flouro, a tippet ring, and at least 3' of 3X fluoro tippet. My indicator leader is similar, usually with a longer and possibly lighter tippet. A typical dry fly setup would be a 9’ 4X leader and adjust with added tippet of up to 4-6’ of 5 or 6X.
Other gear: Float tube/pontoon boat/pram, and normal fishing wear.
Flies: Flies to match hatches above and we will send out a more current list as we get closer to the dates and better understand how the weather and water are impacting the hatches.
TVFF Cancellation Policy
To sign-up for a TVFF Event that is currently open for registration and chargeable (as set by the Fishmeister), you must both register and pay online, or via check or cash, within two weeks of registering (sent to the TVFF Treasurer) whatever fee is described for that particular Event (trip) at the time of registration. There may be multiple payments required before the trip is actually taken (usually in the case of expensive trips), but it is necessary that you do make payment in the above timely fashion for the initial amount to secure your position on the trip. However, please note that you are still responsible for the entire amount of the trip if you should need to cancel.
Once you are registered, there are no refunds for chargeable Events and trips. In the situation that a member is, for any reason unable to attend, they may resell their registration slot to another TVFF member (by first pulling from the waitlist if one exists). New participants must come first from the waitlist in the order they signed up. The member cancelling is fully and solely responsible for contacting potential members to replace them and notifying the appropriate Fishmeister.
If an event/trip is fully registered and closed to registration, you may still sign up on the Wait List to be notified if there are any cancellations. In such a case of registering provisionally on the Wait List, you do not have to pay until such time that you clear the Wait List and are confirmed for participation.
