The Fall Hunt for Fat and Hungry

Lower Sac Rainbows

Event Description:

This is an opportunity to join Jim Roberts and friends who will guide us to fish the Lower Sac Rainbows during the traditional fall "Egg-Bite".  The 'Egg-Bite" occurs as the salmon arrive in the Redding area to spawn and the fish are particularly anxious to feed on the eggs the salmon produce.  Rainbows generally average around 18" with some up to 24" so it's an exciting time to be on the river.  Plan to fish two days although a single day of fishing at half price might be arranged.

Departure:  Drive up Sunday Oct 20; fish Monday and Tuesday; and return Tuesday evening or Wednesday Morning.  This is a popular time to fish the lower Sac, and as of Sept. 1, most guides are already booked up weekends.  Weekdays are also filling up rapidly.  If you wish to join this trip, I suggest you register soon.

The trip includes two all day guided drift boat floats on the lower Sacramento with two (2) fishermen to a boat.  Guides provide leaders and flies, lunch and beverages.  Rods & Reels can be included upon request.  (They always carry back-up rods that could be better than what you have).

Note: A Steelhead card is required along with your normal California fishing license.  These can be obtained over the internet at https://www.wildlife.ca.gov

Cost:  $250 for one day or $500.00 for two days of guided fishing, plus tip (assuming 2 fishermen/boat).  Additional cost for hotel accommodations, California fishing license and steelhead card, and food.  Maximim of two (2) days available.

Fischmeister:  Tom Fessenden, Tomjf@comcast.net, (925) 785-6871

Accommodations and Food:

Make your own reservations at any of the many inns and motels in the Redding area.  Trip Advisor reports that double queen-bed rooms are available for around $100/night.

Gear and Tackle Recommendations:

Rod & line weights/types: 6 – 8 wt traditional fly rods & reels.  Floating line.

Flies, Leaders and tippet:  Supplied by guides

Other gear:  Standard waders optional not required, felt or soft sole boots (no spikes in the guide boats), and normal fishing wear including warm clothes (layers), hat., waterproof jackets, and possibly gloves depending upon weather.  It would be wise to prepare for wet and/or cold weather if it develops.
